For more than 100 years, The McGraw-Hill Companies has successfully served its customers, employees and shareholders. Throughout its long history, the corporation has carried out its business believing that its role must extend beyond direct business activities to contribute to improving the quality of life of our society as a whole.
The McGraw-Hill Companies' philanthropic activities were formalized in 1958 to meet emerging issues in a planned, constructive manner. From 1979 to 1997, The McGraw-Hill Companies Foundation served as the Corporation's principal vehicle for providing charitable support. In 1997, the decision was made to replace the Foundation with a new Corporate Contributions and Community Relations program.
PROGRAMS WE SUPPORT
The Corporate Contributions and Community Relations program will give priority consideration to organizations and projects that:
- Promote and support excellence in education and learning, with an emphasis on economic literacy.
- Focus on initiatives that advance knowledge, work and home skills.
- Contribute to the education of our youth in the communities and markets where The McGraw-Hill Companies operates.
- Utilize unique applications of new and developing technologies.
- Extend their reach globally.
- Can be evaluated and can serve as models elsewhere.
- Are staffed and administered by people with demonstrated competence and experience in their fields.
- Have been determined tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code and qualify as public charities under IRS rules.
The program will also encourage, recognize and reward the involvement and contributions that our employees make to organizations in their communities which they value, and which meet the IRS rules described above.
The Corporate Contributions and Community Relations program does not directly administer programs it supports. Recipients are asked, however, to submit periodic progress reports, an evaluation of whether the objectives of the grants are being achieved, and an annual financial report.
PROGRAMS WE DO NOT SUPPORT
The Corporate Contributions and Community Relations program, to make the most effective use of its resources, does not sponsor courtesy advertising, or pledge support for walk-a-thons and similar activities. In addition, it does not contribute to:
- Institutions and agencies clearly outside the primary geographic concerns and interests of The McGraw-Hill Companies.
- Schools of higher education and K-12. Since so many excellent schools are customers of The McGraw-Hill Companies, it would be inappropriate to say yes to some and no to others.
- Political activities or organizations established to influence legislation, sectarian or religious organizations.
- Individuals.
- Organizations included in United Way drives.
- Publication of books, magazines, films or videos.
- Endowment funds.
- Loans of any kind.
HOW TO APPLY FOR SUPPORT
The McGraw-Hill Companies welcomes requests for support, if your organization falls within these Guidelines. If you wish to seek support, please submit a preliminary proposal letter including the following:
- A brief description of your organization, its goals, objectives, staff and outside directors.
- A concise description of the program and objectives for which you seek support.

- Your current years budget and sources of funding.

If your request is considered eligible under The McGraw-Hill Companies' funding guidelines, a meeting may be arranged with the Corporate Contributions and Community Relations staff. On-site visits may also be made. The Corporate Contributions and Community Relations Committee meets quarterly and decisions on pending grants are made at those times. The McGraw-Hill Companies will support innovative programs that increase the abilities of people around the world to learn, to grow intellectually, to master new skills, and to maximize their individual talents for school, work and community.
Grants are not renewed automatically. Your request for support must be submitted each year, accompanied by your organization's current audited financial statement, annual report and evidence of current 501(c)(3) public charity status under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
